Meet the Coastal Joe Pye Weed
Coastal Joe Pye Weed | Eutrochium dubium
How do you know it’s me?:
I am an herbaceous flowering perennial.
My purpley-pink flowers are tiny, making up dense flower plumes at the end of each stem. They have a fluffy texture.
My leaves are whorled, meaning they spiral around the central stem at a common point.
Each leaf has a rough, wrinkled texture, and a pointed oval shape. My leaf margins are serrated, and each leaf has three prominent veins originating near where it attaches to the stem.
I have smooth stems with purple spots.
How big do I grow?: 3’ - 6’ height and 2’ - 4’ spread.
Sun-seeker or shade-lover: Full sun to part shade.
Where I prefer to put my roots: Moist, rich soils, medium to wet. I do not tolerate dry soils.
Hardiness: Zone 3-9
Original home: I am native to coastal plains and wetlands in eastern North America.
Colors: My flowers are typically colored purple to pink.
When I bloom: Mid-summer to fall.
Wildlife friends: Many butterflies and bees flock to my flowers, and my seeds are enjoyed by songbirds.
Flora Fun Facts: Many sources indicate that “Joe Pye” was a Native American healer from New England, who used this plant to treat a variety of conditions.
More Info: This pollinator powerhouse has a long blooming period of downy purple-pink flower clusters.
A member of the Asteraceae (Daisy) family.
This plant has a tendency to reseed and spread.
‘Babe Joe’ is a cultivar with a shorter stature, usually maturing to about 3’ in height.
A host plant for several caterpillar and moth species.
A great choice for a pollinator or rain garden.
